Cameras

Rock Wall, Verdure and Magnolias were all shot with a Rollei SL66 with 50mm, 80mm and 150mm lenses.

Ohio Horizon was shot with a Fuji 617 with the 180mm lens.

Tobacco Panoramas were shot with a Hulcherama with a 55mm Mamiya lens. This is a rotational panoramic camera, meaning the camera turns in a circle. As it turns, it pulls the film past a thin slit in the back of the camera, exposing a thin strip of the film.

Tobacco was shot with two cameras, both custom made. They were designed to take 4x5 backs. The first camera had a 65mm Super Angulon and 1" rise on the lens. It wasn't beautiful, but inspired me to design the next camera, one with 1" rise and fall on the lens and two intechangeable front panels. They had 75mm Super Angulon and 120mm Symmar-S lenses. The body was made of rosewood (cocobola) and is beautiful. However, it is horizontal only, which I thought was fine when I designed it. I did not expect to ever shoot vertical images. A Horseman 612 back was used for all of the images.

Farmington River was shot with three cameras, the afore mentioned rosewood camera, a Noblex 150 (a wonderful camera that makes exceptionally sharp negatives), and another custom made one. The latter is made from aluminum, Delrin and ABS plastics. It has a revolving graflock back, allowing vertical shooting without tilting the camera. It has two interchangeable lenses, a 75mm and a 127mm, both made for the Mamiya Universal Press camera. Three backs were used: a Horseman 612 back, and two custom made backs. One was a 614 made from two cludged together 6x7 backs. The other was a 613 back. It was made from a Graflex RH50 back with the opening widened to the tops of the two rollers. That back used 70mm film in cassettes. I would probably still use that back, primarily for the convenience (25 56mm x 124mm exposures per roll), but Kodak kept increasing the minimum order. The last I knew it was 10 100' rolls, necessitating 'home rolling', which is fraught with danger.

The Early Work was shot with two view cameras. The 4x5 images were shot with a Calumet metal monorail with a 90mm Angulon lens. The 5x7 and 8x10 images were shot with a Korona 8x10 with a 9-1/2" Goerz Double Anastigmat, an early version of the Dagor.

The rosewood and aluminum/Delrin cameras with 612 backs and the Rollei SL66 with are my current cameras, although I'll use whatever the subject demands.

Film

Sheet film used was Ektapan. I can't remember why I choose it.

The 70mm film was Tri-X (TX). All other images were and now are shot with 120 film. Most were shot with Tri-X (TX). A few were shot with TMAX 400. I also use Fuji Neopan 400. It has all of the strengths of TX, plus finer grain, higher resolution and renders foliage about 1/4 step or Zone lighter.

Developers are D-76, 1-1, Ilford DD and DD-X.

Printing

Fiber based prints are made on Warm Tone Ilford MGIV FB and toned with selenium.
